Jil Sander is a German fashion company that has been offering women's fashion in the upper price segment since 1968 and men's fashion since 1997. The fashion brand Jil Sander was founded in 1968 by Heidemarie Jiline "Jil" Sander, who opened her first boutique in Hamburg. At that time Jil Sander hit her very own tone in the fashion industry with her simple, elegant designs and the use of luxurious fabrics. She was nicknamed "Queen of less" by the press because she knew how to set clear lines and simple tones in scene. Along with Karl Lagerfeld and Wolfgang Joop, Jil Sander is considered the most famous German fashion designer, who also made her breakthrough internationally.
In the early days of her company, Jil Sander's simple design met with little approval from the women of the time. It was not until 1976 with the so-called onion look, which consisted of several individual parts that could be combined with each other, that the brand made its international breakthrough. It was not until the end of the 1990s that the company extended its fashion to men's fashion, for whose collection Italian fashion designer Roberto Menichetti was hired.
Jil Sander's fashion follows a clear line: high-quality fabrics, subtle colours and no unnecessary details. Especially in the early days, it was a reversal of what competitors like Dior had brought to the market. With her trouser suits and unlined blazers in colours such as dark blue, beige and white, Jil Sander designed fashion for emancipated career women. She was not only a pioneer in the fashion world, but also set an example for the advancing equality between men and women.
The company's menswear also follows the line of modern simplicity and timeless elegance with body-hugging suits and blazers. In addition to women's and men's fashion, Jil Sander is also known for its women's and men's fragrances. As early as 1979 Jil Sander worked with the perfume brand Lancaster and created the perfume label Jil Sander Woman Pure under the umbrella brand Jil Sander. The most famous fragrances are Jil Sander Sun and Jil Sander No.4, which are still popular perfumes on the market today.
